Gijón is a surf city. Right in the centre, in front of the promenade, San Lorenzo beach picks up waves for much of the year and is one of the places in Spain where most people have stood up on a board for the first time. If you already surf, there are good breaks a short drive away along the Asturian coast. Here is where, when and how.
Where to surf in Gijón
San Lorenzo beach
The heart of Gijón’s surf scene. A long sandy beach with several peaks along its roughly 1.5 km and a sandy bottom that makes it fairly forgiving for learners. The setting is urban: you surf with the city at your back, and when you come out there are showers, schools and cafés a few steps away.
Its weak point is the tide: at high water the sea reaches the wall and conditions change a lot. Schools know which hours work best each day; if you go it alone, watch before paddling out and ask the locals.
Tip: the council runs a beach webcam on the official San Lorenzo page. Have a look before grabbing your board.
Peñarrubia beach
To the east, past El Rinconín and Cervigón, Peñarrubia beach is wilder, with no promenade or buildings. It is more exposed and can have waves when San Lorenzo is small, but it is also more demanding. Best for surfers with some experience.
Nearby breaks
With a car and intermediate or advanced skills, central Asturias has well-known beaches less than an hour away: Xagó (Gozón), Salinas (Castrillón) and Rodiles (Villaviciosa), the last with one of the most famous river-mouth waves in northern Spain. Combine it with a visit to Villaviciosa and Tazones or Avilés.
When to surf
- Autumn and winter: the main season. Atlantic low-pressure systems send north-westerly swells with more size and quality. Short days and cold water.
- Spring: good conditions and fewer people; a great time to come.
- Summer: a smaller, calmer sea, perfect for beginners. On the downside, there are more swimmers and bathing-season restrictions (see below), and some days are flat.

Lessons and board hire
Along the San Lorenzo promenade there are several surf schools with beachfront premises offering single lessons, multi-day courses, board and wetsuit hire and, in some cases, surf camps with accommodation. Courses normally include all equipment and insurance.
What to look for:
- Qualified instructors and small groups.
- Equipment included (a soft-top board for beginners and a wetsuit in your size).
- Flexibility: if the sea is not cooperating, a good school will move your lesson.
- Children: many schools group by age; being able to swim is essential.
In some seasons the city’s sports department (Patronato Deportivo Municipal) has run taster courses for young people. Check what is on via the council’s activities website. More sports and leisure ideas in tours and activities.
Bathing-season rules
According to the council’s page for San Lorenzo beach (checked in October 2026):
- The bathing season runs from 1 May to 15 October.
- Boards and other craft are not allowed in swimming zones.
- Sports on the sand are banned from 10 am to 8 pm, except for activities organised by the municipal sports department or in designated areas.
In practice, during the bathing season you must surf in the permitted areas and follow lifeguards’ instructions. Outside the season there are no lifeguards: do not go out alone if you lack experience.
Safety and etiquette
- Right of way: the wave belongs to the surfer closest to the peak. Do not drop in.
- Beginners stay in the white water: practise on the gentle inside, away from surfers waiting at the peak.
- Rip currents: with a swell running, rips form. If one pulls you out, do not fight it: paddle parallel to the shore.
- Cold water: the Bay of Biscay is cold year-round. The right wetsuit makes all the difference: 3/2 mm in summer, 4/3 or 5/4 with boots in winter.
- Rocks: there are rocky areas at both ends of the beaches; keep clear at low tide.
