Nights in Gijón start early and finish late. The usual pattern is a glass of cider as the light fades, a long dinner and, if you still have the stamina, drinks in one of the city’s nightlife areas. You do not need to know specific bars: it is enough to know which neighbourhood suits your mood. This guide takes you area by area and explains how to go out like a local.

How nights out work in Gijón (and Spain)

If you are visiting from abroad, the timings take some getting used to:

  • Early-evening drinks (7 to 9 pm): terraces and cider houses fill up. Weekend afternoon drinking, known as tardeo, is increasingly popular.
  • Dinner (from 9 pm): in a cider house, a restaurant or grazing from bar to bar.
  • Drinks (from midnight): cocktail bars and pubs.
  • Clubs (from 1 or 2 am): at weekends and in summer.

Thursday nights already have a buzz, especially with students; Friday and Saturday are the big nights. In August, during the Semana Grande festivities, the whole city is out on the streets.

Where to go out

Cimavilla: cider, small bars and a neighbourhood feel

The old fishermen’s quarter is the most characterful area. In Cimavilla you find cider houses, tiny bars, places with live music and a relaxed, slightly alternative atmosphere. Its steep lanes, little squares and harbour views give it real charm. Ideal for starting the night with cider and small plates.

Tip: Cimavilla is a residential neighbourhood. Have fun, but keep your voice down in the street late at night: the neighbours will thank you.

The marina and Fomento

Between the Plaza Mayor, the marina and the Fomento area you will find terraces, cocktail bars and venues that fill up at weekends. It is the classic place for a drink overlooking the boats and carrying on without moving far.

The centre: Begoña and around

Paseo de Begoña and the surrounding streets have terraces, beer bars and places for every age group. The crowd is mixed, and it is close to the Teatro Jovellanos, so it works well before or after a show.

La Arena and the promenade

Behind San Lorenzo beach, the La Arena district mixes local bars, beer bars and terraces. Summer evenings along the San Lorenzo promenade are among the most pleasant in the city.

Nights out without the nightclub

  • Sunset: climb Santa Catalina hill to the Elogio del Horizonte or head down to Poniente. Our favourite spots are in best sunsets in Gijón.
  • A long cider-house dinner: noisy, convivial and with cider poured from on high, it is a night out in itself. Learn the ritual in our cider guide and pick an area in where to eat in Gijón.
  • Theatre, dance and music: the Teatro Jovellanos and the Laboral have programmes all year round.
  • Cinema: in November the Gijón Film Festival (FICX) packs the screens.
  • A night-time stroll: the lit-up promenade with the sound of the sea is a Gijón classic in any season.

Special nights of the year

Some dates turn the city into one big night-time party:

  • Antroxu, the carnival, in February or March.
  • Semana Negra in July, with its fairground open until late.
  • Begoña fireworks, on the night of 14 August during Semana Grande.
  • New Year’s Eve, when the city pours onto the streets after the twelve grapes. See Christmas in Gijón.

Getting back to your hotel

  • On foot: if you are staying in the centre, Cimavilla, the marina, Begoña and La Arena are all close together. Advice on areas in where to stay.
  • Night bus: EMTUSA runs night routes (Búho). Check current routes and times on its website, as they can change in summer and during festivals.
  • Taxi: there are ranks in the centre; on big festival nights, be patient or book ahead.
  • Car: do not drive if you have been drinking. Parking in the centre on weekend nights is also tricky.

Tips for a night out in Gijón

  • Bring a jacket: even in summer it gets chilly by the sea in the small hours.
  • Cider is deceptive: it is low in alcohol, but the small glasses come round quickly. Drink water and eat something.
  • Cash and card: almost everywhere takes cards, but carry a little cash just in case.
  • ID: some venues may ask for it at the door.
